Insider: Carey keeps it up
Tuesday, October 6, 2009
By The Macomb Daily Staff Within the inner circles of county politics, the skirmish between county Commissioner Carey Torrice and county board Chairman Paul Gieleghem over her office decorations has provided intrigue for some, laughs for most. When word leaked out that Torrice was threatening legal action against Gieleghem for trying to remove movie posters from the walls of her county office, some enterprising county official or employee went to work. An envelope mysteriously showed up at the front desk of The Macomb Daily and inside was a copy of the threatening letter Torrice’s attorney had sent to the chairman. The document clearly had been fished out of a waste basket, where it was crumpled into a ball. The copy was marred by jagged black marks and lines where the many wrinkles had prevented a clean reproduction.Torrice continues to taunt Gieleghem. Not only did she put the movie posters back up on her wall, she added a third poster of Gieleghem’s political nemesis Sheriff Mark Hackel. The poster features the county buildings of downtown Mount Clemens in the background. The sheriff towers in the foreground, as if he were a giant who had risen up from the Clinton River. The text? Simply, “Mark Hackel, Your Sheriff.”Every time Gieleghem walks by, we suspect you can hear a little giggle coming from within Torrice’s office.URL: http://www.macombdaily.com/articles/2009/10/06/news/srv0000006568548.prt
