Meals on Wheels Academy Awards

Barb Heikkila, works for Macomb County’s Senior Nutrition program “Meals on Wheels.” Barb works out of a site on 15 Mile Road in Clinton Township. Barb and her aide pack about 85 meals a day for the Meals on Wheels volunteers to come and pick up to deliver to the home bound in the area. She serves lunch to the community that is interested in a nutritional lunch. Their program is open to anyone but they focus on senior citizens.

Part of her job is to provide speakers on various topics and hold several parties a month. They try to provide useful information and fun ways for the seniors to come out and socialize.

This month, Barb and a fellow site supervisor and a came up with a unique idea to promote their lunch program and recognize the senior citizens. They are hosting the first annual MCCSA awards. They are making it very similar to the academy awards. They will have a red carpet, gift bags for the nominees/winners and even a little award for each to accept.

Barb and Kathy were in the process of lining up local celebrities to present each award. Barb wrote to “Local Celebrity” Macomb County Commissioner Carey Torrice in hopes that she was available and willing to present some awards. Carey Torrice gladly accepted the invitation! Meals on wheels is one of Commissioner Torrice’s favorite programs. Carey Torrice’s Grandpa used to receive Meals on Wheels” and he loved chatting with the volunteers when they stopped by! Carey always volunteers her time to deliver meals on wheels. Mrs. Torrice is very excited about the event! Carey loves the Movie Industry and loves to put smiles on people’s faces!

The event will take place Peace Manor in Clinton Twp, on Thursday, October 22nd. The event will begin at 10:
