Animal Update 4-11-08

Hello All, You are receiving this e-mail because you expressed interest in volunteering to help with the efforts at Macomb County Animal Shelter. This is what is happening at the moment. Rescues are pulling animals due to be euthanized from the shelter. There are currently 15 rescues registered and we were able to save 50 animals since they started allowing us to pull animals. Sadly, there are still many more that are still being euthanized because the rescues can only take so many animals at a time. We are completely dependent on foster homes. It is difficult to find people able and willing to house a shelter animal in their home. Every animal our rescue has pulled has been very well tempermented thus far. Although it is important to remember that fostering a shelter animal is not easy and that sometimes they are sick and might need to be kept away from other animals etc. Rescues are meeting with the shelter heads regularly to discuss policy changes and to increase the shelter’s adoption rate. On a larger level we hope to create animal education programs, spay/neuter initiatives, and other help for low income Macomb County residents to reduce the amount of animals that get sent to the shelter in the first place. The shelter has also promised to begin posting their adoptable animals on petfinder by Monday so that is a huge step forward. Thank you to those that volunteered to help with petfinder however the shelter insisted on doing this “in-house” and as long as it gets done we’re happy. As you can imagine, this is not the sort of thing that happens overnight and while we are making progress it can seem very slow moving at times. Please refer to this website www.allaboutanimalsrescue.org, periodically for updates on what is happening with our efforts and what you can do to help. There is also a link to a group discussion page on this website for all things related to the animal shelter. Currently…here are ways you can help…*We of course definitely need foster homes. We can only take as many animals as we can find room for.
*Our rescue has already begun offering reduced rate/free spay/neuters for low income Macomb County residents. We are working with other rescues that are pulling from Macomb to offer them a greatly reduced cost for spay/neuter and vaccines. If you would like to volunteer your time or money towards these efforts which in turn will hopefully reduce the number of animals that get sent the shelter in the first place and help other rescues take more animals from the shelter please reply back or use the contact info on the website.
*Our rescue is running a vaccine clinic on April 17th that we need volunteers for. The funds from this go towards our spay/neuter clinic and help people get their animals vaccinated at a greatly reduced price.
*Commissioner Torrice is sponsering a fundraiser at 3 Dog Bakery in Partridge Creek. She might be able to use the help of volunteers to help with this event. Contact her at [email protected] for more info. I know she would definitely appreciate you spreading the word around or attending the even yourself. Christine Divito.
