The best choices for Macomb County Commissioners

October 8, 2008

District 16(northern Clinton Township): Incumbent Democrat Carey Torrice, 31, faces Republican former commissioner William Revoir, 52, whom Torrice narrowly upset in 2006. Revoir, an ordained minister and financial planner, had chaired the county’s finance committee. That experience could be an asset to the board. He proposes some interesting ideas on lowering costs, including allowing county employees to purchase health insurance with savings accounts and opt out of certain coverage that they don’t need. Still, his opposition to a county executive puts him at odds with reformed-minded commissioners.

Torrice, an actress and licensed private detective, supported the executive proposal and successfully pushed a plan to make the Macomb County Animal Shelter a no-kill facility. She’s not one of the board’s leaders but generally makes sensible decisions on budget, economic development and other issues. CAREY TORRICE has performed well enough to merit re-election.
