Macomb County Commissioner withdraws from Michigan House race
Macomb County Commissioner Carey Torrice withdrew from a state House race today and decided to run for another term on the Board of Commissioners.
Torrice, D-Fraser, filed to run for both seats but had until Friday to decide on one.
Many Democrats were closely watching the race, saying Torrice had a good shot to win a traditionally Republican seat, which is held by term-limited Republican Rep. Kim Meltzer.
Seven Republicans also are vying for the seat.
The lone Democrat standing is Macomb Township resident Andrew Prasiloski, whom Meltzer easily defeated in November 2008.
Torrice said she opted to exit the race to focus on local issues, such as continuing to lead an effort to end euthanasia at the county-operated Animal Shelter in Clinton Township.
I made the tough decision to withdraw because I received so many emails from voters who wanted me to stay local, she said today. I think I can better assist the residents of Macomb County by staying at the local level.
